ENGAGED LEARNING GUIDELINES - Fall 2020 and Beyond

To support the health and well-being of our university community during the pandemic, the following guidelines for off-campus U-M engaged learning activities are in effect during the ongoing pandemic. These guidelines will remain in effect so long as the Detroit Region (region 1) of the MI Safe Start Plan, issued by Governor Whitmer on May 7, 2020, remains in Phase 1 to 5. These guidelines will subside once Region 1 reaches at least Phase 6.

The purpose of these temporary guidelines is to track the locations of U-M students engaged in off-campus U-M-related experiences and enable communication and public health updates as needed. In addition, the guidelines require students planning to participate in off-campus UM-related activities to comply with regulations, orders and guidelines at the engagement’s site, and to stay updated on changes in such regulations, orders and guidelines.

The guidance defines which U-M-related off-campus engaged learning activities are in scope and advises students on the steps needed to proceed. The guidance applies to U-M-Ann Arbor students engaging in off-campus activities that entail an in-person component. It does not apply to any on-campus activities, nor to any activity offered exclusively in remote format.

The following guidance is for the Ann Arbor campus

Off-Campus and In-Person UM-Related Engaged Learning for Students

Definitions:

  • Off-Campus engaged learning activities are activities that take place off campus and engage students in real-world problems in a variety of settings. Examples of off-campus, UM-related engaged learning include: internships , student teaching, and other practica; programs like Camp Davis, the Biological Station, Semester in Detroit, and Washington PSIP; required and elective trips that are part of a course; service and community engagement opportunities; research activities not already regulated by UMOR; performances and exhibitions; and other co-curricular activities. Clinical rotations in the health sciences are not considered engaged learning activities for purposes of this guidance and are exempted from the requirements herein.
  • Off-campus engaged learning activities are considered UM-related if they are funded, sponsored, managed by the University and/or if they are for credit or required for degree completion. See Global Michigan for a complete definition of UM-related.

Guidelines:

  • At times when the Detroit Region (region 1), as defined in the MI Safe Start Plan, is in Phase 4 or 5 (see Detroit Restart Michigan page for phase updates), students must register any in-person engaged learning activity that takes place off campus and within the United States: Student Registration for Engaged Learning.  Through the registration, students must agree to follow any applicable laws, rules, regulations, orders, and public health guidelines at their host location. They must also agree to follow any applicable U-M requirements for returning to campus after their engaged learning activity concludes.
  • At times when the Detroit Region (region 1), as defined in the MI Safe Start Plan, is in Phases 1, 2 or 3 (see Detroit Restart Michigan page for phase updates), students are required to seek approval before they pursue an in-person engaged learning activity. The process includes completing a Student Application for Engaged Learning and including written approval from their academic unit. Requests will be reviewed by the Chief International Safety Officer before students may proceed.
  • No UM-related, off-campus engaged learning activity can violate UM travel policy (e.g. SPG 601.31 or the U-M suspension of international and domestic air travel until further notice).
