Overview
The goals of the project are to explore how research space is allocated, managed, and monitored on the Ann Arbor campus.
Scope
This project affects General Fund academic units with research space on the Ann Arbor campus.
Goals
The goals of the Research Space Management project are to:
- Explore current school/college business practices for managing research space and identify best practices.
- Determine campus needs for campus-wide research spae management guidelines and research space productivity metrics that might be applicable across disciplines.
- Develop guidelines and systematic reports to support school/college research space management needs.

Current Status

4/09: The draft guidelines were shared with the Academic Program Group (APG) and the Budget Administrators Group (BAG).
3/09: The draft research space reports continue to be modified based on the feedback received from budget administrators.
2/09: Space Utilization Initiative Project Manager shared draft guidelines with Vice Provosts and Associate Deans Group (VPADG) to obtain feedback. Draft research space productivity reports have been shared with budget administrators from a few schools and colleges as well as the Office of Space Analysis.
1/09: Associate Vice President for Research Steve Ceccio and Space Utilization Project Manager shared draft guidelines with SACUA Research Policy Committee to obtain feedback. MAIS is developing draft reports that would aide in making research space management decisions.
12/08: Associate Vice President for Research Steve Ceccio and Space Utilization Project Manager shared draft guidelines with Research Associate Deans (RAD) group, Academic Program Group (APG) Budget Subcommittee to obtain feedback. Draft guidelines will be vetted and shared further with additional campus groups in the coming weeks.
10/08: Shared draft research space guidelines with a group of four research associate deans, a budget administrator, and the Space Utilization Initiative Steering Committee to obtain feedback.
9/08: Drafted generic research space guidelines, based on focus group feedback from four research associate deans and conducted thorough web searches of other research institutions.
8/08: Space Utilization Initiative Project Manager and Associate Vice President for Research met to discuss common themes from the focus groups and are determining if there is a campus need for research space guidelines.
6/08: Conducted a small focus group with four research associate deans. The purpose of the focus group was to better understand how research space is managed, allocated, and monitored within these units.
