Beinecke Brothers Memorial Scholarship Beinecke Brothers Memorial ScholarshipThe Beinecke Brothers Memorial Scholarship is awarded to juniors who are planning graduate work in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. Applicants should have excellent academic records and recommendations from faculty who can speak to their promise of success in a graduate program, and must be able to demonstrate a history of receiving financial aid. Jack Kent Cooke Graduate FellowshipsThis program awards approximately 35 scholarships to college seniors or recent graduates to attend graduate school. Funding for tuition, room and board, books, and other required fees varies, but it can extend for the length of the graduate degree program, up to six years, with a maximum award of $50,000 per student per year. Rhodes ScholarshipThe Rhodes Scholarship provides funding for two or three years of graduate study in Great Britain. Rhodes Scholarships are used in any program available at Oxford. Nominees must be endorsed by their institutions. More information about the Rhodes Scholarship is available on their website. To be eligible for the Rhodes, Marshall, Mitchell, or Churchill Scholarships, students must hold an undergraduate degree by the fall in which the scholarship begins. Successful candidates usually have a GPA of 3.7 or better and a record of participation in activities that demonstrate leadership and commitment. In 2005, the Provost’s Council on Student Honors modified the Rhodes, Marshall, and Mitchell application process at UM, instituting a phased approach. Phase 1 materials (two faculty recommendations, transcripts, résumé and personal statement) must be submitted to the Office of the Provost, 3084 Fleming Administration Building, by 4:00 p.m. on the last Friday in March. Campus interviews will take place April 14 and 15, 2008. Applicants who are endorsed by the University will prepare formal application packets for the fall, including a 1,000-word personal statement due August 1. It is very important to begin discussing letters of recommendation with faculty members before the end of Winter Term. Marshall ScholarshipsMarshall Scholarships finance young Americans of high ability to study for a degree in the United Kingdom. Marshall Scholars can choose from a large number of universities and programs in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Nominees must be endorsed by their institutions. Information about the Marshall Scholarship can be found on their website. Fulbright Scholarship ProgramThe USIA Fulbright Program provides a number of opportunities for American citizens to study and conduct research abroad and for citizens of other nations to do so in the United States. Information about the Fulbright Scholarship Programs can be found on their website. Goldwater ScholarshipUp to 300 students in mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering who
will be juniors and seniors in the coming academic year will be selected
for scholarships of up to $7500/year by the Barry M. Goldwater Foundation.
Applicants must be nominated by their institutions. Information about the Goldwater
Scholarship can be found on their website. Luce Scholars ProgramLaunched in 1974, the Luce Scholars Program is intended for recent college graduates of the highest intellectual and professional promise who lack any previous experience of Asia. Internships, arranged for each scholar on the basis of his or her specific interest, background, qualifications, and experience, run from mid-September until July. Scholars are not paid by the their local sponsors, but they receive a significant monthly stipend from the Henry Luce Foundation sufficient to cover their normal expenses in Asia. Truman ScholarshipsTruman Scholarships are awarded annually to juniors and third-year seniors who are planning careers in public service. Successful candidates receive awards of up to $30,000 for the senior undergraduate year in college and two years of graduate studies. Information about the Truman Scholarship can be found on their website. Udall ScholarshipsUdall Scholarships are awarded annually to sophomore and junior students who are planning careers related to the environment and to Native American and Alaska Native students who plan careers in health care and tribal public policy.
