Spencer Smith, who graduated from U-M with highest distinction in April 2011, is the 16th U-M student to have been awarded a Marshall since the scholarship was founded in 1953. “We are proud that for the second year in a row a Michigan student is among the 40 Marshall Scholars. Math, says senior Alex Carney, is not about numbers or shapes. “It’s the study of the fundamental relationships between ideas,” he explains. “It’s not simple coincidence that nearly all of even the most theoretical mathematical developments turn out to be useful in a huge variety of applications.”
The Midland native who first came to appreciate math through his violin, will graduate with honors in May. He already has several publications in the field of number theory. At the University’s spring commencement in April 2007, then-LSA senior Abdul El-Sayed stood at a podium in Michigan Stadium and said that, besides the fact that BTB Burrito is open until 4 a.m., what truly sets the University of Michigan apart is its students. “It’s the care we’ve shown, the people we’ve helped and the passion that we have that define us,” said El-Sayed, who was the student speaker at the ceremony. “Moreover, it’s the fact that we’re about to go out into a world that absolutely needs us.” more
Lyric Ingrid Chen, a 2006 LSA graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and economics, has won a prestigious Marshall Scholarship to study comparative politics at Oxford University.
Chen currently is in China on a Fulbright Scholarship, learning about the country’s society and institutions and assisting individuals at legal aid centers in several cities. Contacted by e-mail, Chen says she was surprised and thrilled to hear of her selection. “It was a shock to receive the phone call, and I was speechless on the phone.” more
