    Overview and statistics

Employees other than faculty at the University of Michigan are appointed to a specific title in one of the following job families: Academic Administrative (Ungraded), Professional and Administrative, Office, Technical, Service/Maintenance, Operating Engineers, Trades, MAP (Security and Public Safety), Allied Health Professional and Administrative, Allied Health Technical and Nursing. There are over 3,450 job titles in the University classification system, each associated with a salary grade, benefit structure, and FLSA exemption classification.

A regular employee is a staff member whose employment is either full or part-time and is reasonably expected to continue indefinitely. In contrast, the University also employs temporary employees and student employees. A temporary employee is a non-student whose employment is irregular, sporadic, or casual, or is set for 12 months or less at the time of employment. A student employee is an individual enrolled in the University of Michigan whose primary purpose for being at the University is to obtain an education. A student employed for less than 30 hours per calendar week or 75% effort is presumed to be primarily a student.

Statistics for regular staff as of November 1998 are presented below. Figures include staff for the Ann Arbor Campus as well as the University Hospitals. All counts are based on individuals who had a paid appointment as of November 1, 1998, excluding people associated with the University who do not have an appointment fraction or effort attached to their appointment. Temporary and student employees are also excluded from these figures.

As the figures above indicate, the Ann Arbor campus currently has almost 19,000 regular staff members. About 8,000 of these employees are in the University Hospitals system while 11,000 are in units throughout the rest of the Ann Arbor campus. Currently, women comprise 71% of the non-academic staff and minorities comprise 18%. Figures are not available for 1990 using the same methodology used in compiling the figures found above. However, other data sources indicate that there has been a substantial increase in the staff over the last decade. Data from the 1989 Equal Employment Opportunity Commission Higher Education Staff Information report indicates that there were approximately 16,000 staff employees at the beginning of 1990’s. Thus, it appears that there has been a growth of more than 2,000 staff in the last ten years.
