STAFF PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT The Office of Human Resources and Affirmative Action (HRAA) (http://www.umich.edu/~hraa) provides leadership and service in all aspects of human resource management including recruitment and retention of faculty and staff; equal employment opportunity and affirmative action policies; development of the skills and abilities of faculty and staff; supporting constructive human relations in a diverse and multi-cultural work environment; ethical, humane, consistent and legal management practices; recognition and regard for both individual and group achievement; and efficient use of limited financial resources to provide compensation and benefits that are competitive in the appropriate markets. Recognition of staff service and achievements is one component of HRAAs mission. A University-wide program of service awards honors non-academic staff members. The Workplace 2000 Staff Recognition Awards honor staff members who have made marked contributions to the mission and work of the University. More than 180 persons are nominated annually. The UMatter Staff Recognition Program acknowledges the efforts and contributions staff make to the University of Michigan, recognizing individuals for outstanding service and performance in the course of their regular duties. The Promotional Openings Program (POP) allows staff members at their own initiative to apply for and receive consideration for open positions with the University. Vacancies of half time or more are advertised in the University Record and on posting boards in about six locations around campus. Postings can also be found on the internet at www.umich.edu/~jobs/. An important part of HRAAs mission is to support professional and personal development. The University provides staff the opportunity to develop their talents and acquire new skills. The Office of Human Resource Development (HRD) offers a wide variety of courses and workshops, including seminars for managers and decision makers. In addition, HRD offers other services such as customized training for departments and organizational development consulting. Information about HRD courses is published each summer and available on-line. (www.umich.edu/~hraa/hrd) The Professional Development Virtual Calendar (http://www.umich.edu/~hrd/programsandcourses/calendar.html) lists courses and events by day and month, showing courses offered by HRD, the Family Care Resources Program, the Sexual Harassment Prevention and Resolution Program, Occupational Safety and Environmental Health, and Information Technology Division. Other University units provide specialized courses and workshops. The Information Technology Division offers short, non-credit computing courses for staff, faculty and students and has a library of tutorials on over 200 topics available on the web. Financial Operations offers training courses and on various topics such as cost accounting standards and payroll. The University also offers a tuition reimbursement program for staff who complete a course at an accredited institution. This program is intended to support ongoing formal educational attainments of staff, paying for credits in degree programs through the masters level, including basic education and high school attainment.
