    PERFORMING ARTS

The performing arts have played an integral part in making the university a very special place. This commitment to the arts contributes greatly to the overall quality of life at the university, in Ann Arbor and for the larger surrounding region.

The University Musical Society (UMS) (http://www.ums.org/) has been in existence since 1880. An independent organization with important connections and collaborations with the University, UMS presents arts events in Hill Auditorium, the Power Center, and other venues in Ann Arbor. UMS is recognized internationally for the outstanding quality and diversity of premier performing arts series. Artists from all over the world are presented in over 70 events annually, including recitals, orchestras, dance, chamber ensembles, jazz, world music performers, opera and theatre. The University Musical Society also sponsors over 150 educational events for the wider community, which include youth programs, artist residencies, and the commissioning of new works.

The School of Music (http://www.music.umich.edu/performances_events/perf_events.htm) presents a wide range of drama, dance, opera and musical theatre, from ten full-scale works (http://www.music.umich.edu/departments/theatre/index.htm) each year to faculty and student recitals. These offer exciting opportunities for students to acquire production experience and skills. As well, each year, Basement Arts, an off-shoot of the Department of Theatre and Drama, produces five or six theatrical events.
