RESEARCH POLICIES The University of Michigan is committed to the highest standards of ethical behavior by faculty, staff, and students engaged in the conduct and administration of research and other scholarly activity. As noted in the Policy Statement on Academic Integrity (http://www.research.umich.edu/policies/um/integrity.html): It is a fundamental responsibility of the faculty, staff, students, and administration of the University to maintain the trust of the public in all research and scholarly activity. Without integrity, the privilege of academic freedom intrinsic to scholarship and education could not be justified, nor could the advancements of knowledge that derive from free and open inquiry be provided to society. All members of our academic community share the responsibility to assure that misconduct in academic endeavors is dealt with in a timely and effective manner, and that the reputation of the University for high standards of scholarly integrity is preserved. The University has therefore developed a number of policy statements that guide and govern the often complex set of activities comprising research and other types of scholarly endeavors. The Policies and Research Responsibility website (http://www.research.umich.edu/policies/policies.html) maintained by the Office of the Vice President for Research contains comprehensive information on various University policies relating to research topics such as: animal use in research, classified research, cost accounting standards, Federal security, human subjects, indirect cost recovery, integrity of scholarship, intellectual properties, nondiscrimination, nondisclosure and confidentiality agreements, processing contracts and contributions, routine/commercial testing guidelines, and student practicum/internships guidelines. The website also contains information on University committees concerned with research policy and on federal and state policies.
