Enriching Student Life and Learning

The Public Goods Council offers University of Michigan students access to extraordinary collections of written, visual, performance and ecological resources. More importantly, the PGC seeks to engage students with these resources in creative, stimulating ways, thereby deepening their learning experiences at the University, engendering a lifelong appreciation for the arts and humanities, and contributing to their personal and professional development.

Throughout the year, Public Goods Council members work together to bring world-class exhibitions, preeminent speakers and talented performing artists to campus, providing students with opportunities to augment their formal academic learning with interactive, experiential activities. In one recent collaborative effort, which involved special tours for student groups, historic material from the Clements Library contributed to the creation of a notable exhibition of Judaica at the University Library, in celebration of the establishment of a curatorship in this field.

Students

Each fall, incoming students are introduced to the University's lively arts scene through Artscapade, a Welcome Week activity co-sponsored by PGC members, including the Museum of Art, Arts at Michigan and the University Musical Society, in conjunctionwith other University academic and administrative units. The annual event now draws up to 3,000 new students on a single evening into the Museum of Art, where the campus newcomers enjoy live performances, hands-on art activities, student-made films, a scavenger hunt, and tours of the building and its art.

The PGC is pleased to offer a series of faculty programs on teaching with public goods resources.

Other PGC initiatives take students out of the classroom and into the community where they partner with K-12 educators, local school children, public cultural agencies, museums and grassroots groups.
