Mentoring Programs
Letter from the Provost
Dear Colleague,
Welcome to the Faculty Mentoring Web Page. The strength of the University of Michigan derives from the excellence of its faculty. The excellence of the faculty, in turn, depends crucially on our ability to provide an environment in which every faculty member has the means to do his or her best work. Each of us has an important role to play in creating and sustaining a supportive environment, and each of us can contribute to the overall strength and effectiveness of the University by undertaking conscious effort to to mentor faculty and to provide training for and recognition of excellent mentoring practices.
To advance faculty mentoring on campus, the Provost's Committee on Mentoring and Community Building has created this web page. It catalogues mentoring programs currently used by a variety of our schools and colleges. In addition, it includes a collection of resources available to support individual and academic unit mentoring activities. It serves as a campus-wide site for sharing best practices. I want to thank the members of the Advisory Committee for creating this important community resource.
There are many challenges to building a strong and engaged academic community for faculty, including the size and tremendous diversity of our University. I encourage you to take advantage of this new central resource to improve your own mentoring skills and to strengthen the mentoring practices of your colleagues, department chairs, and others who may benefit. Please feel free to provide comments and suggestions for improvement of this site by sending a message to provost.mentoring.adv.cmte@umich.edu.
Best,
Paul N. Courant
