Mentoring Programs

Letter from the Chair

Dear Colleague,

I am pleased to introduce you to our new web page. In November 2000, the Provost's office sponsored a successful retreat on mentoring and community building. Following the retreat, the Provost's Advisory Committee on Mentoring and Community Building began its work. Although there is little dispute over the value to faculty of a strong mentoring system, it is clear that mentoring across campus takes many forms. We determined that a central resource on mentoring and community building would help individuals and units share their current practices and encourage the development of new mentoring skills and programs. This web site is the product of those discussions.

Whether you are an individual faculty member interested in providing or receiving mentoring or a department chair hoping to improve the mentoring practices within your department, the information on this site should be helpful to you. Several mentoring programs from across the University are highlighted. In addition, several resources on mentoring and community building are provided. As our Committee plans future events related to faculty mentoring, we will post the event information on this site. We hope that you find this information useful and we would be very pleased to receive your feedback. The Committee can be contacted by e-mail at provost.mentoring.adv.cmte@umich.edu.

Best,

Marilyn S. Lantz
