The Graham Institute is pleased to announce the creation of a new Small-Scale Grants Program. University of Michigan faculty, students, and staff members may consider applying for grants of up to $10,000 in order to support innovative research, educational, operational, and outreach initiatives relating to environmental sustainability.
These funds may be used in a variety of ways, including student, staff, and faculty-led sustainability initiatives, purchasing of supplies and materials (excluding equipment), and non-food or space rental costs associated with lecture series. These funds may be used in conjunction with support from schools/colleges and/or departments, and such leverage of support is encouraged. It is expected that these grants will range from as low as $500 (e.g., to support a seminar speaker) to as much as $10,000 (e.g., support of collaborative research). The average small scale grant award, to date, has been $2,500.
Examples of projects eligible for support from this program include:
- Investigation and preliminary development of new collaborative research proposals between faculty members
- Investigation and preliminary development of new degree programs for either undergraduate or graduate students (e.g., joint degrees and minors)
- Interdisciplinary lecture series, particularly those that examine critically the current status and future directions of environmental sustainability research or education.
- Proposals for enhancement of the practice of sustainability in university operations.
- Innovative research or educational outreach programs within the University community or broader community (K-12, City of Ann Arbor, etc.)
