Graham Institute Student Internshipsarrows

The Graham Institute plans to expand, over time, opportunities for students to apply their knowledge resolving sustainability challenges or to be part of research or experimentation related to their studies. Two general categories of internships are anticipated - academic program related and summer employment opportunities.

Academic Program Related Opportunities

As noted in the Program in the Environment web link, a program requirement is participation in a field study internship. The Graham Institute awards $25,000 each year to top PitE students to encourage them to accept more challenging field study internships. Five to six student awards are given each year.

  • In the School of Natural Resources, a Master's opus is required. The Graham Institute worked with one the Graham Institute Advisory Board member companies to develop a challenging freshwater study important to the pharmaceutical industry. Four students are presently involved in an 18 month study.
  • A Ph.D. level project is under development with an Advisory Board research organization that will meet the requirements and help support a Ph.D. thesis.
Summer Employment Opportunities

The Institute is moving carefully into this area to be sure that the summer employment opportunity relates to sustainability and that management of the program is containable within our administrative capability. The Institute hopes to expand the program in future years if the early results are promising. For the summer/fall of 2007, two projects are underway.

  • An Erb student has been accepted to fulfill a challenging global internship with an international mining and petroleum company examining how sustainability best practices can be incorporated into decision making.
  • A BBA student is working with a re-manufacturer of cell phone equipment to determine how to incentivize cell phone users to recycle and to make the process more visible and easy to accomplish.
The Institute has also been in contact with the local government and hopes to develop opportunities for summer employment opportunities and longer term projects.

Watch the news page for announcements regarding future opportunities.
