The Graham Environmental Sustainability Institute (GESI) mission is to:

Create opportunities and encourage collaboration among science, policy, engineering, and business faculty to extend the knowledge of, and offer solutions to, complex environmental sustainability issues - recognizing the need for balance between societal needs and social responsibilities.

The Institute will:
  • Encourage environmental sustainability collaborative research through financial and administrative support.
  • Leverage U-M research and academic efforts and publicize U-M academic and research opportunities.
  • Encourage innovative academic programs that explore the complexities of environmental sustainability and emphasize the inter-relationships between ecological systems.
  • Develop an outreach program that educates communities and policy makers on how to economically and effectively achieve environmental sustainability.
By achieving these objectives, the long-term goals of the Graham Environmental Sustainability Institute are to: (1) increase the University of Michigan’s multidisciplinary research and education in the environmental sustainability field, and (2) position the U-M as a global leader in environmental sustainability.
