7.G International Initiatives
A number of campus programs and offices support faculty whose work
has an international dimension. Several of these programs are described
briefly below. Interested faculty should check with their dean's office
for information about school or college-specific opportunities.
Please note: faculty interested in developing formal relationships
with other institutions, either nationally or internationally, should
make
sure that their plans are reviewed and approved by the appropriate
dean's office, the Office of the General Counsel, and the Provost
and Executive
Vice President for Academic Affairs before activities begin. Guidelines
for establishing international agreements are available at the International
Institute's website at <www.umich.edu/~iinet>.
Similarly, faculty interested in taking students on trips, nationally
or internationally, should make sure that their plans are also reviewed
and approved by the appropriate dean(s) and the Office of the General
Counsel. The International Travel Oversight Committee reviews safety,
health, and logistical arrangements for existing and proposed study-abroad
programs and other international group activities. It also monitors
health and safety conditions in sites abroad, both where the University
has ongoing programs and where individuals may be traveling on University-related
business. For more information, call 615-8482. Another source of information
is the Off-Campus Travel Handbook for Faculty, Staff, and Students,
available online at <www.umich.edu/~benefits/events/travel>.
The International Travel Information and Registry website at <www.umich.edu/~itoc>
provides information sources for international travel and a Registry
for members of the University community who are planning travel abroad.
The International Institute coordinates research and training
in area, comparative, and international studies with LSA and
promotes and supports a range of innovative collaborations and sponsored
projects
across the University's schools and colleges. For more information,
see the International Institute's website at <www.umich.edu/~iinet>
or call 763-9200.
The International Center provides services to international
faculty, scholars, students, and staff, including assistance with
visas (see
Section 5.G.6, "International
Faculty")
and programs designed to help new international members of this community
make a successful transition to life in Ann Arbor. For more information,
see the International Center website at <www.umich.edu/~icenter>
or call 764-9310 (Central Campus) or 936-4180 (North Campus).
The College of Engineering's International Programs in Engineering
Office
is responsible for international activities at the College of Engineering
such as drafting and implementing international agreements, hosting
international visitors, administering educational programs (for example,
the Program in Global Engineering and the Engineering Global Leadership
Honors Program), administering faculty/graduate/undergraduate international
exchanges, and enhancing international activity in the College of
Engineering
through publications and participation at global symposia and conferences.
For more information on the International
Programs in Engineering Office, contact them at 647-7129 or see
their website at <www.engin.umich.edu/ipe>.
The Stephen M. Ross School of Business maintains an ongoing commitment
to provide faculty with research and teaching opportunities around
the
world and to provide its graduate students with transformative action-based
learning projects across the globe. The William Davidson Institute,
aimed at assisting firms in the transition from central command economies
toward advanced market economies,
serves as the School's focal point for many of these initiatives. For
more information, see the William Davidson Institute website at
<www.wdi.umich.edu>.
