6.B Criteria for TenureAfter the appropriate probationary period (see Section 6.C, "Tenure Probationary Period"), tenure may be granted to those instructional staff members whose professional accomplishments indicate that they will continue to serve with distinction in their appointed roles. The criteria for tenure and the criteria for promotion are similar, but not identical. Tenure is awarded to those who demonstrate excellent teaching, outstanding research and scholarship, and substantial additional service, each of which must be relevant to the goals and needs of the University, college and department. The award of tenure is based on the achievement of distinction in an area of learning and the prediction of continued eminence throughout the individuals professional career. The Regents will not confer tenure unless the instructional staff member achieves or gives strong promise of achieving promotion in rank within the University.
