3.A General Principles
Founded in 1817 as one of the nation's first public universities,
the University of Michigan's mission is "to serve the people
of Michigan and the world through preeminence in creating, communicating,
preserving,
and applying knowledge, art, and academic values, and in developing
leaders and citizens who will challenge the present and enrich the
future."

The University of Michigan is a state-supported university that is granted
constitutional autonomy by the state constitution. The University of
Michigan has campuses in Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint, each with its
own schools and colleges.
