20.D UM Information Technology Providers
20.D.1 Information Technology Central Services (ITCS)
The Universitys Information Technology Central Services provides
many of the centralized technology resources for the Ann Arbor Campus,
including the Basic Computing Package, the campus telephone system,
and the campus cable TV network. The Information Technology website,
ITWeb, is continuously updated and has information about technology-provided
services as well as many other campus and vendor technology resources.
The URL is <www.itd.umich.edu>.
In addition, walk-in, telephone, and online consulting are available. See <www.itd.umich.edu/help>.
The Flint and Dearborn campuses each have their own information technology
support organizations. Faculty from either of these campuses should
first check with their departments and then with their campus information
technology organizations for information about available computing
resources. Many of the
Ann Arbor technology-provided services are also available to Flint
and Dearborn.

20.D.2 Michigan Administrative Information Services (MAIS)
Michigan Administrative Information Services (MAIS), which began operations
July 1, 2000, is a service organization that supports the use of institution-wide
administrative information services by the Universitys schools,
colleges, research institutes, administrative offices, hospitals and
health centers, and regional campuses. The MAIS organization is the
result of the Universitys 1995 Strategic Data Plan to establish
the long-term direction for the effective use of the Universitys
information resources.
As a service unit, MAIS has three primary goals: to support those individuals
who use administrative information systems; to support the services
delivered to the faculty and staff by central office administrative
units and the schools and colleges on all campuses; and to drive improvements
in end-to-end administrative processes through the effective use of
University-wide information technology systems.
MAIS supports three major administrative information
systems that work together within an integrated technical and data
infrastructure: Financials/Physical Resources, Student Administration,
and Human Resource
Management. MAIS also supports the Universitys systems used in
fundraising and development activities; in addition, MAIS provides
operational
support for a limited number of other information systems within the
University community. For more information, see <www.mais.umich.edu>.
20.D.3 Medical Center Information Technology (MCIT)
The Medical Center Information Technology Department (MCIT) provides
the information services for the University of Michigan Hospitals and
Health Centers, and a subset of information services to the University
of Michigan Medical School.
Its mission is to provide and enhance access to and utilization of all
information technology to support patient care, education and research.
MCIT provides networking, distributed services, data center operations,
database administration, systems support, applications development and
support, data warehouse and clinical data repository development and
support, desktop software and hardware deployment and support, help
desk services, and many other resources.
20.D.4 Computer Aided Engineering Network (CAEN)
It is the mission of CAEN to support and encourage the most efficient
and effective use of computers, networking, and information technology
in order to improve the quality of education and research within the
University of Michigan College of Engineering.
CAEN offers many specialized services for faculty and staff members.
These services include providing a variety of computing accounts
(CAEN
AFS, Exchange e-mail, Oracle, and others); providing necessary software
or equipment for classroom instruction; assisting faculty and staff
in the acquisition, networking maintenance, and administration of departmental
workstations; and providing additional consulting services.
CAEN also is available to assist engineering faculty interested in exploring
how commercial packages, or those developed at other universities, can
be integrated into the classroom. CAEN staff members research various
software sources to find solutions that address faculty interests and
oversee software installation and implementation.
The CAEN Service Center is available to handle Macintosh and many PC
hardware repairs, as well as most printer repairs.
Detailed information about all CAEN services can be found at the CAEN
website at <www.engin.umich.edu/caen>.
Requests and questions can be directed to the CAEN staff via the
Contact
CAEN feature on the CAEN website or by mailing <CAEN@umich.edu>.
For further assistance, faculty can call 764-CAEN.
20.D.5 Schools and Colleges
In addition to CAEN (above), there are a number of other colleges,
schools, and departments on campus that have their own IT units. Many
of these units provide extensive IT services, including direct end-user
support, which replace or complement centrally-provided services. These
locally-provided services are often customized to be better suited to
the needs of the specific discipline. Faculty members should be sure
to check with their unit administrator to see if their particular area
has IT representatives who may be able to assist.
See UM-IT Resources/School and College IT Providers at <www.itd.umich.edu/it-resources.html>.
